Abe and I have wanted a dog for-EV-er, but we never had the time or space....until now! Last week we decided we were ready to adopt a dog and starting sniffing around some local shelters.
I put in an application with L.A.B Rescue in Connecticut and a day later I received information on a yellow Lab pup named Lily [note: she definitely a Lab mix - I think she has hound dog in her]. A couple days later Lily and I hit the road and traveled from her foster home in Connecticut to her new home in New York!
Lils had a rough first 4 months of her life and was severely beaten by awful, horrible humans, but some wonderful people in Texas rescued Lil and her brothers and they were brought up to New England. Once in Connecticut, she and her brothers moved in with a loving foster family who nursed the pups back to health. Lily's brothers were adopted fairly quickly, but Lily seemed to be having a hard time forgetting the past and trusting people. She lived with her foster family for 3 weeks until Abe and I saw her photo and said "We'll take her!"
She's going to need a lot of training to get her back into carefree puppy mode, but Abe and I know she's going to be a great addition to the family. And don't worry about Paws, he's already throwing his weight around and Lily is not interested in getting in his way (although she wouldn't mind eating all his food when his back is turned). I can't wait for the day when they snuggle up together.
I know not all dog-lovers can adopt a dog, but you can still do things to show your love by volunteering at a shelter, or by sending your local shelter donations of money and supplies. We're sooooo thankful that there are amazing volunteers out there willing to save animals from horrific conditions and others who will foster a dog or cat until a permanant home can be found. It takes a special kind of person to be willing to do all that for an animal in need.
